Programme Notes

About the Italian tradition.

The Italian vocal tradition is among the oldest and most revered in Western music.

From the courts of Renaissance Florence to the concert halls of nineteenth-century Naples, the human voice — elevated, embellished, and surrendered to pure song — has been Italy's most celebrated artistic export. The programme for Songs of Italy draws from this deep well: Baroque arias, bel canto masterpieces of the early Romantic period, and the beloved Neapolitan songs that captured the popular imagination of Europe.

The Neapolitan Song

The canzone napoletana emerged in the nineteenth century from the streets, cafés, and theatres of Naples. Works such as O Sole Mio, Santa Lucia, and Funiculì, Funiculà were among the first popular songs distributed internationally as sheet music and, later, recordings. Their directness, warmth, and melodic immediacy gave them a reach that formal opera never quite matched.

Bel Canto & Opera

The operatic arias in the programme come from the tradition of bel canto — 'beautiful singing' — which flourished in early nineteenth-century Italy under Bellini, Donizetti, and Rossini. This style prized purity of tone, seamless legato, and the ability to ornament a melodic line with seemingly effortless grace. It remains the technical and expressive foundation of classical voice training to this day.
